Yesterday (Sunday) we went snorkeling off of Snake Island (yes, you read that correctly). We all rode in the back of a truck to get to the boat landing.
We took a relatively small boat across the Caribbean to the island (about a 45 minute drive). The water is so blue and beautiful - in one picture you can see three different shads of blue. And the water is so warm!! There was a cruise ship just off the island when we landed. It is an uninhabited island, named after the boa constrictors that apparently inhabit the island. We swam around a little there and tried out the snorkeling gear and then we took the boat around to the other side of the island to some coral reefs. The waves were pretty choppy (which I guess is not normal) so it was really hard to snorkel. It was so pretty though being able to see underwater - too bad none of us had an underwater camera. The fish and plants were so colorful and unique - it was so cool to be able to see deep down in the ocean. Our guide apparently swims for National Geographic - he was able to dive to the bottom and pick things off the ground (starfish, a lobster, etc.). He was really really good. It was only $30 US to snorkel, and it was well worth the money.
That is the cruise ship, that is NOT our boat. See all the pretty blues?
We spent the rest of the afternoon laying out in the sun and swimming in the Caribbean. Of course, everyone got burned...but thankfully I only turned a few shades darker and suffered a little sunburn on my shoulders which is not too bad. We also walked around the island a little bit in search of snakes (we wanted to see if it really deserved its name) but all we found were hermit crabs and lots of coconut. The ranger who was on the island was kind enough to open up a few coconuts with his machete and we were able to drink the coconut milk straight from it.
(I have now been waiting a very long time for one picture to upload...anyone have any suggestions to hurry the process up each time I get on, please let me know. :-) )
The snorkeling picture is priceless!
