A while back, when I was visiting one of my professors from school, she gave me a great baby-proofing tip. She suggested that instead of spending a lot of money buying the padding you can adhere to the side of sharp objects (such as a fireplace hearth, for instance) we could purchase either the swimming noodles (or other foam tubing) and put that along the edge. Compared to how much you can pay for the stuff in stores, this is virtually free! We took her advice and Gabe and I went hunting! Gabe found this foam tubing (I think it is supposed to insulate water or gas lines) and made a nifty edging for our fireplace hearth.
Here is what he did for the corner.
Here is the entire edge lined with this foam.
And here is what the finished project looked like!
And here is what it looked like not too soon thereafter, when Jacob discovered he can bit pieces off of the foam and can try to rip it right off the fireplace.
And now, after rearranging the family room furniture, it is open again, so he can get to it. However, we're hoping that he has lost interest in destroying it. At least long enough for Gabe to figure out a way to baby-proof the baby-proofing.
Great application.. those foam rolls are great... Richard uses them to tidy all the different wires that run to various electrical items, this makes sweeping floors so much easier as you only have one thing to lift and mover rather than several wires and it looks tidier too.
